Spatial Audio vs Stereo: What Musicians Should Know
Spatial audio promises immersion beyond left and right. Here is what it really is, how it differs from a wide stereo master, and what matters for your release.
Stereo has been the standard for decades: two channels, left and right, creating a sound field between your speakers or headphones. Spatial audio aims to place sound all around the listener, including a sense of height and depth, for a more immersive experience.
How stereo width works
A great stereo master already creates impressive width using mid/side processing: the center (mid) holds vocals, bass and kick solidly, while the sides carry width, air and ambience. Lifting high frequencies on the sides and keeping bass mono produces a wide, dimensional image that still collapses cleanly to mono. This is the foundation of a professional-sounding master — covered in how to master a song online.
What spatial audio adds
True immersive formats (like Dolby Atmos) use object-based audio: individual elements are placed in a three-dimensional space and rendered to whatever system the listener has. It is a different production workflow, usually mixed specifically for the format, and delivered through platforms that support it.
What an independent artist actually needs
For the vast majority of releases, a beautifully wide, well-balanced stereo master is what makes your song sound expensive and immersive on the devices most people actually use — phones, earbuds, laptops and cars. Enhanced stereo width and air give you most of the "spatial" feeling listeners notice, without a separate format-specific mix. Read how loud should my master be to pair that width with the right loudness.
HALOSOUNDS Studio + Spatial
The Studio tier applies a true mid/side mastering stage — side-channel air, mono-locked bass, mid sweetening and enhanced width — to give your stereo master a genuinely immersive, three-dimensional feel that translates everywhere.
